QMusic president and GYROstream founding partner Viv Mellish is spotlighting four of her favourite female industry professionals in Brisbane ahead of the final One of One breakfast tomorrow.
Celebrating its tenth anniversary, One of One - the Australian not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and empowering female and GNC workers in the music industry - has been touring around the country with a breakfast series. Though the rest of the events wrapped up last month, Brisbane’s breakfast was postponed thanks to Cyclone Alfred - and is now set to be held at The Triffid tomorrow morning (April 16).
The event will feature a fully catered breakfast, performances, awards, and a keynote address from Ali Tomoana, the Managing Director of the independent record label, artist management, and booking agency Soul Has No Tempo. Tomoana also currently manages the careers of Miss Kaninna, Tiana Khasi, Ladi6, and others, and has cultivated new Australian talent for over a decade.
In anticipation of tomorrow’s event, Mellish - an industry powerhouse in her own right - is kindly taking The Music through her top four female professionals making waves in Brisbane’s music industry, though she says “Choosing just four [is] incredibly hard.”
“There are so many incredible women and GNC folks working in our industry across QLD who deserve to be highlighted.”
Tyler McLoughlin was one of the first people I met when I started working full time in the Brisbane music industry and she has become one of my great mates. I think she is such an incredible operator. She started The Sound Pound, her own music supervision and sync business in 2011 and more recently embraced the world of artist management with Bobby Alu. Both of these ventures are still going strong, so much so that her career as an artist manager recently landed her a spot at the Seed Fund Program helping emerging managers grow their own careers. I also genuinely believe that Tyler knows more than anyone about copyright in the Australian music industry, and she will happily talk till the cows come home about it to anyone who will listen!

Even though I have only met Tyla a handful of times, it’s obvious that her passion for the live music sector is huge. Bringing Crowbar from Sydney to Brisbane, of which she is Director and COO, has played such an important part in sustaining the Valley’s live music culture. Her contribution to our industry in this space is massive, as was the way she helped to breathe life back into the nighttime economy in New South Wales by reopening The Bald Faced Stag. She is obviously extremely invested in seeing small businesses thrive, and it's so exciting to see such a strong role model for females and GNC folks in this sector that is dominated by male venue owners. She is not only an excellent business person but she is also a Mum and I love seeing someone absolutely slay at both of those things.
What has Maggie not done in the Brisbane music scene? Artist Management Company owner, Bigsound Programmer, QMusic Board Member, Executive Director of the Association of Artist Managers... Maggie is an incredible role model for not only female and GNC managers, but for every manager out there trying to grow their career. Her skills and knowledge of the industry are second to none, and during our work together on the QMusic board I have loved seeing her strategic expertise unfold and inform the way we work. Did I mention she was also a presenter and producer at triple j for ten years? I remember listening to Maggie back in the day thinking "Wow, she sounds so cool”, and I am very proud to be able to call her a friend.
I met Natalie last year when she was working with QMusic as part of her QTouring role, and I was just so impressed by her. She carries herself with such lovely calming energy which left a mark on me, particularly because she is operating in such an intense sector of the industry. After we met, she took on artist management for JK-47, an artist that GYROstream has had a very close relationship with for many years now. It's been fantastic to see her operate in the management space with him. She is such a powerhouse example of how the generational knowledge of a First Nations leadership in union with an artist like JK-47 can move mountains in this industry. She is an absolute joy to interact with and I’m 99% certain she has never yelled at anyone in her entire life.
