Melbourne indie quartet Soft Corporate have been gigging around old Melbourne town for longer than their freshly minted moniker lets on, and their secret history turns out to be a secret weapon in new track Boat, premiering on The Music today.
That history — that they cut their teeth under the name When We Were Small for several years — translates into an astoundingly assured and mature first release for Soft Corporate. Pulsing bass kicks and airy vocals dominate the opening soundscape before the widening gyre of the chorus takes hold. The song is a masterful exercise in dynamic diversity, winding through peaks and troughs between its passages, with guest vocal work from Lulu Spencer providing an additional dimension of gorgeousness before shrill, wailing, atmospheric guitar takes over, leading into a cacophonous crescendo that ultimately — and kind of brilliantly — fades into breathless nothingness in its dying seconds.
Boats is taken from the band's impending debut EP, Good Things Will Happen. The single is currently available on the band's Bandcamp page.
