Festival Survival Tips With King Stingray, Budjerah & More

29 June 2022 | 9:34 am | Dan Cribb

To celebrate (and prepare for) the return of the BYO festival, some of the Aussie talent on this year’s Jungle Love line-up have shared with us their survival tips.

Hope D

  • A mobile phone with wifi - so you can do the Wordle each day.
  • Sunglasses - purely to people watch.
  • Cotton candy - don't have much to say on this besides that everyone will love you.

Flamingo Blonde

  • A hat - shit gets too hot and you can't shade your mug? The worst.
  • Sort your method of transport earlier than four hours beforehand. Egg on YOUR face.
  • A signed copy of Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis just in case.

Pink Matter

  • Hydrate. Water and a little tube of Hydralyte will go a long way.
  • Mozzie spray, you can never be wrong with protection.
  • Spare bags for dirty gumboots, clothes and your rubbish.

Budjerah

I don't really have much festival experience to date because of COVID so it’s still very new to me:

  • Bring water because it’s important to be hydrated, especially when you’re running around and dancing all day.
  • Have a jacket or something to keep you warm - it gets cold when the sun sets.
  • Last tip is to see a band you’ve never heard of before. Festivals are the perfect place to try new things and to expand your scope on the music scene.

Full Flower Moon Band

  • Denim overalls (knee length) - are comfortable and practical.
  • A reliable and attractive campsite light - no one likes a party lit by a phone.
  • A flannelette jacket - lightweight, provides warmth/sun protection/something to sit on.

Top three necessities for a festival are definitely:

  • Lip balm.
  • Some sunscreen.
  • A sparkly outfit.

K+Lab

  • Book a hotel for your exit from the festival so you can have a good recovery before the drive home (if it's a long drive).
  • Pack extra socks, fresh socks resets my whole vibe, haha.
  • Bring a sippy cup, super handy and it can be hard to find a vessel to drink out of sometimes plus no spills when you're feeling wobbly.

Cam (King Stingray)

  • There's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. That quote appeared on every school camp notice I ever got. That's top tip number one. Be prepared for unrelenting rain and scorching temps. That goes for your camp as well. A sodden tent is no fun, and neither is trying to rest and recharge in a shadeless deathzone.
  • Number two is to stay fed and watered. One festival kebab each day, though delicious, is not enough to replace the energy you burn walking and dancing. Roy is my exemplar for this. The man BYO's oats, nuts, dried fruit and peanut butter and as a result is go-go-gadget for days. You need that energy to fully immerse yourself in a festival and participate as much as you can.
  • That's tip number three... soak it up.

Jungle Love Music and Arts Festival will be held at its brand new home in Jimna, QLD from Friday 2nd - Sunday 4th of September. The festival will welcome some of Australia’s favourite names, unique performers and eccentric experiences to their picturesque, creek-side site. Tickets here.
