The demise of Hateclad and Emporium a couple of years back set the stage for the formation of one of Brisbane metal’s shining lights, Hollow. They soon hit the studios for the release of their Exhibit B EP, and the recent Overcranked festival saw them turn loose a demo version of their soon to be release double A side single. Live the band put on a powerhouse performance that has seen them share stages with overseas heavyweights like Entombed, Vision Of Disorder and Strapping Young Lad as well as Aussie legends Alchemist and Blood Duster. Bassist Kent took the time to answer a couple of questions.

Congratulations on the whole Overcranked shebang, can you give us an overview of the day?

“Cheers man, but the man you should be congratulating is Antz from PLD. He put in the bulk of the hard work, so you can call him Batman and me Robin!”

How’s the Brisbane live metal scene at the moment? Where does Hollow fit in?

“The scene is picking up big time. A few years back after the demise of Dreamkillers there was a big gap left to fill as far as bands went. I think the talent now such as the likes of PLD, Devolved, D-Nine, Blunt Object, Koil and a lot of other up and comers has served to fill that void with a lot more interest being generated in local shows, especially with the success of Overcranked.”

Hollow turned four a couple of months back. How did you celebrate?

“With a gig at Overcranked, six cartons of beer and a 1125ml of Bourbon at my house with the rest of the bands from Overcranked!”

Has your approach to what you’re doing with the band changed over this period of time? What does the band represent to you now?

“Our approach has changed with the addition of a new drummer and extra guitarist. We are exploring all different styles of music in our own way and fitting them into the Hollow sound, reggae and jazz have figured strongly but it is still heavy if not even heavier than our old stuff.”

“To me Hollow represents the brittleness of the human soul in most people, you can see right through them they are essentially husks of flesh walking around with nothing else left in side, be they good or bad they are the product of the world we live in.”

You’ve scored some pretty decent international supports over the years. Anyone you’re still wanting to land a show with?

“Meshuggah, Dillinger Escape Plan and Mudvayne would have to be my wish list.”

What are Hollow working on at the moment? What’s on the cards for the next few months?

“We have a new AA side single being remixed and mastered at the moment. I and Orange Angels are the two tracks. We released demo versions of these songs at Overcranked but they will be much better when released. We’re about to go on a tour to Sydney in September, Metal For The Brain (Canberra) in November and Judgment Day (Melbourne) in December to promote the single, which will be out soon thru Ward 69 Music. Our album The Hollowing will be completed in December so that too is also on the horizon.”
