Action Is Go.

Girl Action will sashay into Monastery on June 23 with Gemma, Jen-E, De Porsche and Claire Morgan.

It’s time Vegas got a taste of some nasty Girl Action, and Monastery is just the pace to give it to you. On June 23, prepare your ovaries for some extra progesterone injections as four sass-tastic femme fatales take the decks away from the blokes and party down in chic(k) fashion. Joining local legend Jen-E will be newer model on the block De Porsche plus Claire Morgan and ex-New Zealand local Gemma.

After MUCH confusion on my part (Gemma DID live in NZ, now she lives here in Vegas), Gemma was kind enough to shoot the breeze with Rave late one afternoon.

First things first, when did she start DJing?

“Okay, when did I hit the decks? I would’ve first got on the decks in late 1998 at a small club in Christchurch called Heaven, I had only been mixing for about six months at that stage and my brothers friends owned the nightclub. So my brother said to his friends ‘My sister is a DJ, do you wanna get her up one night to play?’ They were like ‘Sweet, get her up on a Wednesday to see how she goes’. So I got up and did a set and they were impressed so they told me to keep coming back on a Wednesday. So I did that for six months, but I like played earlier in the night to get me prepared for when I did get offered big gigs, so I was experienced on playing on a loud sound system and experienced playing in front of people, so when I did the bigger gigs I would be able to pull it off.”

Already the proud owner of a killer reputation around town as a vixen with the vinyl, Gemma says her confidence helped her score larger gigs early in the piece and after a mere three months at heaven in Christchurch, she was offered larger sets, sets that paved the way for an early escape to Australia. But, having listened to many happy New Zealand DJs, I assume the scene there is friendlier.

“It is actually, everyone really works together over there. It’s not so much about competition because everyone really needs to help each other out.”

As for this Girl Action palaver, Gemma agrees that while the tables are turning, we still need more chicks with decks.

“People still say things like ‘Oh its really good to see girls get up there’, but there definitely isn’t as many girls up there as there should be. I don‘t really rate DJs on whether they are a guy or a girl, it should be on whether they are a good DJ.”

Right on!
