With the change of weather comes the hunt for new sounds to perfectly accompany the sudden chill in the air.

This year, Australia experienced the second hottest summer on record. Thankfully, after months of perspiration and staggering power bills, we have finally eased into April - thus here in the Southern Hemisphere it is officially autumn. There is a welcome chill in the air. It is now the season of woollen scarves and falling copper leaves and steaming cups of tea and Twin Peaks rewatches. You could even chuck on a beret if the spirit compels you.

Nothing assists the transition into a different season like the perfect soundtrack. So it is time to find songs that make you feel warm even when it is cold out, and there is a whole range of talented Adelaide artists who might have just what you are looking for.

Swan Reach

Erin McKenzie - the young visionary behind Swan Reach - is a master of DIY production and sonic intimacy. Her tight, ten-track album SUN BEGIN is warm and thoughtful, sweet and cozy. It is rife with personality. Though it is a cliche, playing that album is akin to wrapping yourself in a thick woollen blanket. Swan Reach’s music will give you the warmth you need this season.

Autumn is the perfect time to stay in and reread - or read for the first time - a Virginia Woolf novel - or you can listen to short snarl, who has songs based on Virginia Woolf novels.

short snarl is the creative vision of Adelaide-based musical extravaganza Thea Martin (well-known for their vital contributions to such projects as Twine, Any Young Mechanic, and War Room). The sudden chilly slowness of autumn can be conducive to reflection, and short snarl’s music is sweet and contemplative: the perfect score for the season.

Resting Mind Flowers

Resting Mind Flowers makes thoughtful music - music that is complex but somehow still universal, music that must be listened to deeply.

They have in fact recently put together a lovely tape of demos and recent live recordings which is available to listen to through Bandcamp (or Blake himself will handcraft a tape for anyone who asks nicely). Perhaps autumn is the perfect time to get into cassette tapes - physical media will always reign supreme, after all.

Gilly and Bede/Eyrie

Sisters Clara and Miranda Gillam-Grant are revered in Adelaide as staunch and gentle musical masterminds. They are the state’s arbiters are of ethereal, soul-saving folk. With dynamic melodies and fragile yet effervescent harmonies, the two are a bona fide dream team whose tunes are the perfect fit for an overcast sky.

The two originally burst onto the Adelaide scene with the folk outfit Eyrie, but have since maintained staying power with their newer project, Gilly and Bede. Though Gilly and Bede don’t yet have music available on streaming platforms (Adelaide waits with baited breath), keep a close eye out for their entrancing gigs.

The Mule Trade

The Mule Trade the creative vision of Adelaide-based musician Isaac Byrnes. Right now, The Mule Trade only has one song out on streaming platforms - but it’s worth listening to over and over again. ‘Thief’ is haunting and poignant - and if autumn is the perfect time to stare through misty windows and yearn, then this is the perfect song to listen to while indulging in such wistful behaviour.
