How do you decide what makes it into the program? The film program is curated based on what's new and exciting, what's hot right now in the world of cinema and what's worth celebrating. I'm also interested in things that surprise and delight.
What's the best part of being a Festival Director? The best part is getting to see lots of shows, gigs, events and films. It's amazing what is out there and what is being created. I love working with artists and am always inspired by what they create and love sharing that with audiences.
What advice would you give a young person who aspires to be a Festival Director? Start at the bottom and work your way up. It's important to know and have experience in many different facets of creating festivals: marketing, ticketing, budgets, event coordination, programming, working with volunteers and event production. Travel overseas and around your own country and work/attend as many different festivals as possible. Always check out new work, new artists and ideas. Never settle for just what's coming into the mainstream. Be curious.
Name one thing that's part of your job that people wouldn't expect. You don't just sit around dreaming up potential program highlights all day! With most festivals it's a very hands-on experience and you're across all facets of the festival.
