The internet community is in a state of disbelief this week after it was revealed that a viral post that took aim at hipsters was in fact written by a hipster.
Posted on the TwirlingCatFiddles blog, the post poked fun at the societal trend and included tips on 'how to identify a hipster', 'what to do if your son or daughter tells you you're a hipster' and 'how to cure hipster'. It had 30,000 likes, 5,000 tweets and 2 Google+ recommendations before the scandal hit and it was taken down.
Social media planner Adam Fuller told SPA Confidential today, “The hipster movement is caving in on itself. The main past time of a hipster is now to spend your time complaining about other hipsters.”
The post's author, Callum Homestead, was found out as hipster after a keen internet user found his Instagram feed. It featured 517 pictures of fog in early morning Sydney.
While a spokesperson for the blog could not be found today, Fuller said that the scandal was damaging to the hipster image and signalled that the fad may finally be coming to an end.
“I think a lot of people have hipster-fatigue,” he said, “I've dealt with 37 cases this week. I mean, it seems like websites are inventing stories solely for the purpose of getting the word 'hipster' in the headline once or twice.”
