If you too are in search of yourself or want something more from this universe than sex, drugs and alcohol, take a listen and maybe you too could reach a ‘eureka!’ moment within the dark depths of your soul.
Lawrence Greenwood, aka Whitley, has been on a journey to find something – it is not a lost phone, not a lost love, but himself. This is his third album and it's quite different from his previous works, as he looks deeper into the themes of love lost, love found and new friendships. It's a self-exploratory album about what it means to be a human. The name of the album says it all; not only are we all chaotic and frazzled but so are the stars, so don't feel too bad because we are all in this together. Whitley's musical mecca all began in Mexico, where Whitley drunk-dialed his label. From there on he has been recording his tracks all over the globe. His sound is a bit of Bon Iver, Alt-J and any other indie progressive rock band you can think of.
The first song off his album, The Ballad Of Terence McKenna repeats the line, “It's not a mean world/It's beautiful and I see it” – basically telling us there is beauty in the world, if you look hard enough. I Am Not A Rock sums itself up in the title; he is not a rock and people suck. If you too are in search of yourself or want something more from this universe than sex, drugs and alcohol, take a listen and maybe you too could reach a 'eureka!' moment within the dark depths of your soul. Or just, like, open that bottle of tequila under your desk and take a swig.
