Live Review: Babicka, Mic Mills, Andrew Sinclair

"Babicka and collaborator Mic Mills descended with a collection of dubplates, white labels and digital releases."

Adelaide label Untzz Records are no strangers to Perth. It seems barely a month or two goes by between visits from a member of the label's roster. Four years down, and the guys are going from strength to strength with each new vinyl-only run, picking up supporters locally as well as selectors from across the globe.

Support for the evening came from Andrew Sinclair in the main room, playing a very '80s-/'90s-influenced set mixing Italo disco, new beat, Balearic house and acid. The Connies dancefloor was always packed and Sinclair definitely had the room primed for the main act. Out on the upper deck, a rotating group of selectors including Jooshi Mango, Cool Drink, Beryl & Lindsay Slohand and Bret Murray & Naynay provided a cool soundtrack of disco and house for those enjoying a cocktail, a quick smoke or catching some fresh air.

The clock struck two and the sounds of Bjork filled the main room. Those present were witness to another Gendermess Productions performance. Looking like Noh theatre gone very weird, the three-piece warped and writhed onstage in something not quite drag, and not quite performance art, but very — original.

Finally label head Babicka and collaborator Mic Mills (together they make up MBM) descended with a collection of dubplates, white labels and digital releases to keep the night rocking. The sound was much more techno-forward, with a particular leaning towards acid and '90s-styled galloping basslines. Mixing classic tracks along with Untzz releases and promos, the set was a trainspotter's delight.
