"It’s rare that an artist’s music sounds so varied, from blues to indie-pop, the depth and complexity of Gostelow’s tracks are amazing."
Darby has a voice you can’t ignore. Drawing the crowd in from the corners to the stage, her distinctive voice is backed by meandering, blues-soaked beats and guitar that you couldn’t help but bop along to. Her onstage demeanour was engaging and endearing, and the rapport between herself and the band was excellent. A tight set from a voice that will be hard to forget.
Next up Alexander Biggs served up another guitar-driven set. Favouring the acoustic guitar, his sound was warm and familiar, but alas a bit generic. His set was tight, but not all that interesting, but it seemed to be a crowd pleaser – as a boy with a guitar always is.
Tia Gostelow has hit the ground running with the release of her debut album Thick Skin and tonight was in celebration of this. Just on the cusp of adulthood, the album is one about maturation, and tonight she showed that she has skill beyond her years.
Playing through most of the tracks on Thick Skin, her set was accomplished and admirable. Not a woman of too many words, she chose to let her music do the talking and storytelling. Well known tracks Hunger and Phone Me went down a treat, with people in the crowd giving them some love, dancing and singing along. To play Strangers, Gostelow introduced Lanks to the stage. The pair harmonised beautifully and had us all swaying along to the earworm of a track – this reviewer thinks it’s a Hottest 100 contender.
It’s rare that an artist’s music sounds so varied, from blues to indie-pop, the depth and complexity of Gostelow’s tracks are amazing. Yet it’s her voice that is the centrepiece that anchors it all together, ranging from a sweet falsetto to a deepness that’s almost comparable to Amy Winehouse; you can’t help but be jealous of her talent.
Telling us that she recently got to fulfil a lifelong dream by playing for triple j's Like A Version, Gostelow launched into her cover of Empire of the Sun’s We Are The People. Mass singalongs ensured. Not a fan of encores, she played through and we loved her for it.

There is no denying Gostelow has something special and that we, as the crowd, were lucky to bear witness before she hits the big time.
