Arguably one of the most exciting acts to surface in 2018 has been CHANNEL TRES. In the space of a year he's released a run of tracks, kicking off with the hook-heavy, Detroit house inspired 'Controller', following it up with dance floor favourite 'Jet Black', dropping his debut eponymously titled EP AND he's currently rounding all of this off with his debut Australian tour.
Fusing house and hip-hop, historically, the marriage of the two genres has seemed like a bit of an anomaly, a one off if you will. We've seen artists like Kanye West, Vince Staples, Azealia Banks and more dip their toes into housier conventions, but never have we really seen a project so immersed in both hip-hop and house. He wears his influences on his sleeve, bringing in elements of hip hop through carefully constructed cadences and thoughtful rhymes, but at the same time, he's fusing this with classic Detroit house beats, touches of acid and structuring his tracks in a way that compliments the electronic music, rather than pushing the instrumental to the background.
There's a richness to his smooth, dead-pan vocals that leaves a mark. He's got a penchant for simplicity, but it's his tone and way of writing that pushes past the point of simplicity and makes it super memorable.

This is why his home at GODMODE seems like such a good fit. The forward-thinking electronic label is also home to Shamir & Yaeji, two artists who are also arguably changing the face of electronic music in the same way that Channel Tres is. The label 'takes way-left artists and brings them slightly more to the center. or we take way-center artists and bring them slightly more to the left!' and with their current roster, it's very plain to see that they're achieving just this.
Ahead of his set at Spilt Milk in Canberra on Saturday and his headline show at the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney on Sunday, Channel Tres and the team at GODMODE took some time out from seeing the sights to hang with our pal James Simpson at Prince Alfred Park and take a couple of snaps for our Shot For Sneakers series.
