The new school of hip hop is alive and well and this was just another example of exciting things to come in the industry.
The long weekend saw an even longer line-up of eager fans queued right around the block of Enmore Theatre, all there for one purpose: to see the place be taken over by the new school of rap.
Schoolboy Q, supported by fellow TDE artist Isaiah Rashad, played to an intense audience that had braved the elements, waiting patiently in the rain to support their rap heroes.
It was high-energy from the get-go, as Rashad exploded onto the stage, kick-starting the night with songs from his album, Cilvia Demo. His vicious sounds were well received by the amped audience, with standout songs being Heavenly Father and Shot You Down.
The sold-out crowd was treated to solid performances from both artists, but headliner Schoolboy Q was the man of the night, playing material from his album, Oxymoron. Q's unique voice and charisma are what have seen him become one of music's most exciting talents, with all of this on display at the Enmore Theatre. Standout songs included Collard Greens, Yay Yay and Man Of The Year and a cover of his Black Hippy group member, Kendrick Lamar's song, Maad City.
The audience was exactly as you would expect at a concert of this genre on a long weekend in Sydney. Full of energy and ready to party, there were drinks flying and booties shaking from start to finish. One of the funniest moments was Q telling a guy to “get your ass back in the crowd,” after letting him dance on stage briefly.
The new school of hip hop is alive and well and this was just another example of exciting things to come in the industry. This wouldn't be a true review of the show without finishing with a “Yak yak yak!”
