Retrofuturismus

"It’s post-burlesque, anti-internet, pure pop culture and an enthralling celebration of the future that was."

Citing the future prophesies of Fritz Lang, Stanley Kubrick, Bjork and Barbarella, Anni and Maude Davey, legends of the cabaret and circus scene, have conjured up a fantastical reimaging of futures past with their vaudeville variety theatre. It’s post-burlesque, anti-internet, pure pop culture and an enthralling celebration of the future that was.

RetroFuturismus combines performance and dance art, gravity-defying circus acts and cabaret siren songs. Anna Lumb is joyous with her ode to techno hula-hoop routine and Gabi Barton is mesmerising as she brings an aluminum foil duct to life. Teresa Blake’s strongwoman act serves as a contrast to the above, evoking themes of industrialisation with her brick routine.

Special guests of the night, sultry sensation Stella Angelico and performance artist Leah Shelton (Polytoxic), were above and beyond with their interludes. Leah Shelton in particular, as a Hitchcock-Twin Peaks-inspired heroine who meets her untimely death was the highlight.

Both Stella and Leah are only on for the first week. However, there’s a bevy of other special guests to be announced who are sure to be equally as impressive.

Maude’s man on moon and Anni’s introspective suspended-in-space routine were both poignant and captivating. There are many, many more wonderful short and sharp acts lined up but to reveal them all would spoil the show.
