Live Review: Get your boogie on with James Pepper & Cassettes For Kids’ split EP

Two of the fastest growing names in underground dance music in Australia are JAMES PEPPER and CASSETTES FOR KIDS, and last week, they returned with a club focussed split EP. Having both supported the likes of Andy Garvey, Gerd Janson, Job Jobse, ANNA and playing at Lost Paradise, the boys bring to the table a bank of club experience to mould a perfectly put together dance adventure.

Opening the EP is Cassettes for Kids' 'See the Light'. The track opens with a heavy kick and some jazzy piano chords, preparing the listener for a seemingly smooth, funk house journey. However, as the track progresses, the high hats get faster and the bass line deeper, transforming it into a gritty dancefloor filler. The second half of the track introduces a crunchy, acid bass line and in combination with the chords introduced earlier, provides for a silky smooth, yet aggressive party starter.

The EP follows with James Pepper’s signature flare. 'If Only You Knew' covers all the tropes of the young Sydney producer's trademark sound. The warm piano chords welcome you in, with a classic lo-fi four-to-the-floor drum rhythm to get you moving. Once the driving high hats settle and the bass line wobbles through, the track reaches its peak, transporting the audience to a luscious world of momentary bliss.

Then hit the remixes. Pepper flips 'See the Light' to an ethereal breakbeat groover, with speedy percussion, a wavy synth line and a hint of garage to change the experience completely from the original. Cassettes For Kids remix adds to the sound and vibe of 'If Only You Knew'. His knack for high energy house, popping bass lines and ear-unique melodies come out here, and take the track to an entirely new level.

The four tracks mould together to create a late-night affair unlike no other. Despite being perfect for a DJ set near you, its sonic depth and awareness are should be admired beyond just within that narrow context. Its simplicity brings out the best in both producers, and sets the platform for a massive 2019 for these two bubbling DJs.
