Forgotten in the break-up of Sonic Youth due to Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore's divorce, guitarist Lee Ranaldo has carved out his third studio album since the band's 2011 split with Electric Trim.

While it's a neater take on alternative rock than the recordings he's best known for, Ranaldo has continued to collaborate with a host of interesting artists on the new album including Sharon Van Etten and author Jonathan Lethem.

The hidden complexity of Ranaldo's guitar work is layered over straighter rock songs while his vocals have taken a folkier turn as he enters his sixth decade. Away from the dissonance of Sonic Youth, Ranaldo's sounds becomes increasing engaging with age.
