Live Review: Jebediah, Big Orange, The Limbs, Daisystain

"The dancefloor was heaving with everyone singing, jumping around or dancing."

Being a Friday night in Hillarys, we weren't sure what to expect. Would the place be crowded? Or would there be too little people at Bar1 to see one of Perth's most beloved bands, Jebediah?

Daisystain were the first band up. They opened their set with Lost from their debut LP Antichristine. Their sound is a cross between DZ Deathrays, Violent Soho and Nirvana and they were clearly having a lot of fun on stage.

The place was still looking a bit bare when The Limbs got up on stage but that didn't stop them having a great time. They've got the 'Perth' sound – hard to pigeonhole, different and just a lot of fun. They had people up and dancing, including Chris Daymond from Jebediah. It's always good to see members from the other bands jumping around and enjoying themselves before their set. It is also what is so great about the Perth music scene.

Big Orange have been around for a couple of years now and always put on an excellent show. Unfortunately, tonight was not quite their night as their set was plagued with sound issues. These things happen from time to time and it's the way the band reacts to it that will always speak louder than any issues that arise. Like the professionals they have proven themselves to be, they continue to play with smiles on their faces and get through the set as best as possible. It's why they have built, and will continue to build, a loyal fan base.

By the time Jebediah took the stage, Bar1 was packed with mostly 30-somethings who made the trek to see a band they grew up with. From the second they started with Did You Really, Military Strongmen and It's Over, the dancefloor was heaving with everyone singing, jumping around or dancing.

They played all their hits but it was Leaving Home where things really got wild. You couldn't even hear Kevin Mitchell aka Bob Evans over the crowd singing. By the time they got to Fall Down and Star Machine, the dancefloor had died down ever so slightly as some of the audience ran out of steam. Mitchell stated, “This is the part where we usually walk off for the encore but let's go through the motions of pretending we aren't on stage and ask for an encore!” before ending their set with Jerks Of Attention and, of course, Teflon. As always, Jebediah put on an excellent show.
