Jarryd JamesJarryd James doesn’t think he’ll ever get used to seeing the room from his elevated side of the stage. But at the rate his newfound fame is growing, he sure ought to. The singer-songwriter from Brisbane has shot to #2 on the Australian charts with debut single, Do You Remember, and is on his way to earning the badge of breakout artist of 2015.
The Metro Theatre was nearly filled to the brim with fans eager to hear James’ brand of bedroom soul and soaring falsetto, and in delivering this he did not disappoint. Accompanied by three of his best mates on the drums, bass and keys, the budding artist played a string of slow beat-driven songs from his unreleased debut album – for the second time, ever.
So early in the game, Jarryd James is still forging his stage presence and ability to command even a 1,000-strong room. The garrulous Friday night crowd often lost focus, but he won back their attention with soulful second single, Give Me Something, followed by a delicate tune co-penned by Julia Stone, whom he recently supported on tour.
James also encouraged his audience to get comfortable and just enjoy the music, whether that be with eyes shut, through dance, climbing atop friends or laying on the floor. Though we’re not sure the po-po circling the room would have liked that too much.
