Live Review: Hot Dub Time Machine - Thebarton Theatre

Hot Dub Time Machine puts on the best party ever at Thebarton Theatre.

More Hot Dub Time Machine More Hot Dub Time Machine

As the countdown to the audio/visual journey through time began, people made their way in and packed out the floor, an impressive turnout considering Adelaide crowds' track record in wet and windy conditions.

Having performed several sold out shows in running years during the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the return of DJ Tom Loud, aka Tom Lowndes, aka Hot Dub Time Machine, to the City of Churches was bigger and better than ever. And even though the concept remained the same – live turntable mixing of favourites from the '60s up to 2014, with cabin assistant Time Lord Lulu Loud returning on the huge backdrop screen along with video clips, movie flashbacks and dance tutorials – we welcomed him with wide open arms and party shoes galore.

One crowd-pleasing track followed another and had every punter moving, mix-ups that mashed from hard rock to disco to hip hop, and bold enough to back Rage Against The Machine up with Nirvana, turning the dancefloor into a mosh pit within moments. Although there was one party trick up the DJ's sleeve that gained the greatest crowd response – even better than the ceiling release of substantially more than 99 red balloons. Yes, the switch to the much slower pace of Bjork left the crowd lost and dumbfound, but Lowndes prompted everyone to crouch down. Everyone then did their best to stay low and quiet, until House Of Pain's Jump Around blasted and the room erupted. Party surprise perfection.

More or less, if you've stepped aboard the Hot Dub Time Machine before, you were in for no surprises this time around. You're set to mindlessly dance through the times, frolic in nostalgia and jam out to your past. It was the well-known, the forgotten favourites and the songs you embarrassingly knew all the words to. Couldn't a similar thing be done in your lounge room with a well-arranged playlist? Probably, but it's an incredibly silly, sweaty and super fun night out. Still the best party ever!
