Another stellar set of songs penned, performed and produced by Wagons and company. You’ve done it again, Henry!
Henry Wagons is the king of baritone cool: a strong personality, a suave character and an exceptional musician. Offering something markedly different to the alt.country swagger his band Wagons are known for, his debut solo release Expecting Company? is a collection of songs that sees Henry push his musical envelope into previously uncharted territory – the duet. The resulting seven tracks are a treat to indulge in, with six different guests joining him.
As his off-kilter vocals and a distinctive snare gallop welcome the sensual vocals of Alison Mosshart on opener Unwelcome Company, one gets the feeling this is going to be a fruitful listening experience. Give Me A Kiss sees him return to his baritone best with its crooning introduction, as Gossling joins him armed with her beautifully tender and heartfelt voice, declaring “Henry, we cannot hold out”.
I Still Can't Find Her is another highlight, as Wagons' vocals are complemented beautifully by the spoken word of The Go-Betweens' Robert Forster. It's a twisted exploration of a family's infidelities and is arguably the standout track. Canadian Jenn Grant provides her unique voice on Give Things A Chance To Mend and, as Wagons begs, “Please don't go”, an eerie slide guitar lingers menacingly beneath. Wagons recorded most of Expecting Company? in his Melbourne home studio and played the majority of the instruments, making this even more of a personal victory for the songwriter.
