Live Review: Fishing

Fishing make us Sydney feel carefree at the Newtown Social Club.

Two broken arms and technical difficulties couldn’t stop electronic duo Fishing from doing what they do best and putting on a damn good show on Friday night at Newtown Social Club. The Sydney duo, Russell Fitzgibbon and Doug Wright, showcased their debut album Shy Glow, with the help of Cloud Control’s frontman, Alister Wright, who also joined the dudes onstage to lend an extra hand – the other one was in plaster.

Fishing’s brand of indie electro is something vaguely familiar. More often than not, their disjointed, psychedelic vibe brought other artists to mind, namely another Australian electronic artist, Jonti. The boys showed off the versatility of their album and the brand of music they’ve developed together, moving from dreamy retro sounds to clunky clashes of noise and beats. Alister Wright looked completely at home performing with the duo, especially when all three hit the vocals during the delivery of their latest single, Nineteen/Boy Wunder.

Although this kind of spacey, clanging indie electro sounds like something that’s been done before, needless to say, Fishing still do it well. Shy Glow isn’t game-changing, but when you’re a few drinks down and grooving along with your mates while listening to quality live music, well, who cares?
