Live Review: Courtney Act: The Girl From Oz

"Act has orchestrated a whirlwind, hour-long show into a constant laugh-out-loud celebration of all things Antipodean."

More Courtney Act More Courtney Act

After leaving her residence in LA, Courtney Act has returned home with her one-woman cabaret to celebrate all things Down Under in The Girl From Oz.

The former Idol contestant and RuPaul's Drag Race Superstar has little challenge holding the stage on her own. From an opening number on roller-skates to a uniquely Australian xylophone skit, Act takes the crowd on a tour of her favourite homegrown songs, each with a unique twist but always delivered with a stellar vocal performance.

The difficulty of this show is selling it to us as Australians; domestic-themed comedy can quickly descend into the predictable bogan humour we've all grown up grimacing at. But Courtney counters this with her sharp wit, her distinct perspective and impressive writing to reinvigorate the theme and offer it a bump forward.

Intersecting costume changes with comedy videos and a field report she recorded last year involving Trump supporters (one of the highlights of the show), Act has orchestrated a whirlwind, hour-long show into a constant laugh-out-loud celebration of all things Antipodean. Best of all, she reminds us all of why she shot to stardom to begin with.
