Angus & Julia Stone captivated their audience in Melbourne.
A dreamy haze hangs in the air (either smoke or dust) and sets a serene scene. One of the reasons we so love Angus & Julia Stone is their lyrics: “You rode me on your bicycle down Main Street”.
For You starts with Julia solo then individually focused spotlights reveal the remaining band members. Julia resembles a pretty Byron Bay waitress, Angus, a seafaring vagabond. Julia plays trumpet one-handed during Private Lawns – impressive. Angus makes us wish for an older brother.
Suddenly Julia resembles a wench from a Bornhoffen commercial when she loses three buttons from a lovely black top she tells us she purchased earlier today. “I’m getting a new top so nobody look,” she jokes, before suggesting her brother sing a song. After she leaves the stage, Angus teases, “Can’t take her anywhere!” Ah, Big Jet Plane, you never disappoint. And the fact that Angus allegedly wrote the song after a chance meeting with a chick at a festival only adds to its appeal. Julia returns, having sourced a safety pin, just in time to contribute harmonies. Her take on You’re The One That I Want from Grease sees Julia switch suddenly from sickly sweet to screechy, which jars.
Amazing drummer Chris Dave (from Houston) has a set of cymbals in the shape of those ginormous curly chips you can buy on a stick at festivals. Something about Heart Beats Slow calls to mind Johnny Cash & June Carter. A & J’s banjo player comes from Dandenong Mountains, but the rest of the musicians (as introduced individually by Julia) are sourced from the States and what an enviable ensemble they’ve assembled. “Julia just came up and burped in my ear,” Angus dobs, leaving Julia horrified. There’s an oft-commented on chemistry between the siblings, which adds an intoxicating element to their shows.
Angus & Julia Stone live are extra special and the subtly changing lighting effects accentuate, but never overwhelm, the captivating mood they create.
