An Evening With Kevin Smith

"The lack of a written script means that the show is more like to a Comic-Con panel."

An Evening With Kevin Smith is an engaging show, although its panel-style setting is questionable.

There is no plot. In act one Kevin Smith answers one lucky fan's question, shedding irony on the concept of a Q&A. In act two, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes entertain the audience with off-the-cuff humour and sneak peaks of future material.

In act one Kevin's storytelling is phenomenal, the layered tangents ingeniously wrap back to the initial starting point at just the right moment, and it's many laughs a minute. It's difficult to criticise Jason Mewes when the dynamic of the duo as a whole has changed as much as Mewes himself. The lack of a written script means that the show is more like a Comic-Con panel. This also means that sound and lighting design are minimal, verging on non-existent. The show does have widespread appeal, as someone uninitiated could easily enjoy it. Diehard and casual fans alike will see a wealth of worth in this evening, hearing how Smith came to cast Johnny Depp in Tusk is a story the audience will live vicariously through for years. However, the three-hour show would benefit from the addition of a sketch or two.
