"A willingness to offer childlike platitudes and eloquent musings side by side in a crooked attempt at finding hope."

Barely out of his teens, Philadelphia’s Alex G is incredibly adept at crafting slacker rock maelstroms and malaise without seemingly rising out of third gear.

Going from Elliott Smith-esque maudlin esoterics (Change) to Jeff Mangum-esque raw, bruised, rambunctious oddness (Advice) to Nick Thorburn-esque lo-fi yet garish loquaciousness (Memory), G is undoubtedly an indie soloist magpie. Yet Trick is elevated well above mere mimicry through the constant imbuing of wide-eyed abandon and naivety, a willingness to offer childlike platitudes and eloquent musings side by side in a crooked attempt at finding hope. A true grower.
