Music Theory and your Degenerative Lifestyle
Is there a place for musical theory in modern music journalism?. I know I'm a little late to this particular internet call-and-response circle jerk party but hey, it never hurts to prolong the life of an engaging subject, especially when it is one that I am (and you should be) interested in. Last week a one Ted Gioia published an essay on the current state of popular music criticism and the general lack of any actual musical theory within. You should take the time to read the full article here. Gioia is a heavyweight jazz critic, musican and historian who has edited encyclopedias on jazz music and was a founder of the jazz studies program at Stanford University. In short, he knows his shit. In the piece he is essentially lamenting the loss of the inclusion of any sort of proper musical theory by modern music critics and jounalists in their reporting on today's popular music offerings, which is an understandable annoyance from someone of his position. His post has generated a couple of

Interview: Sean Dunne (Cam Girlz)
Cam Girlz is a documentary exactly about what the title says.. Sean Dunne is a documentary filmmaker who you most likely recognise as the guy who made that amazing short film AMERICAN JUGGALO, about hardcore Insane Clown Posse fans who meet once a year for four days at The Gathering Of The Juggalos. It's one in a long line of incredible online documentaries which culminated in his feature-length document OXYANA last year. The dude is seriously inspiring, so when we heard about his next project, Cam Girlz, and his Kickstarter drive to help move the film along, we jumped at the chance to have a chat with him. Check the trailer for that film below, followed by an interview and all the relevant information on how you can help this film come to fruition - because it'd be really nice to learn a little more about those pop-ups you get when you're looking at porn.

Interview: Senator Scott Ludlam
We chat to Greens Senator Scott Ludlam ahead of the WA Senate re-election.. A couple of weeks ago you probably saw a Youtube video doing the rounds featuring WA Greens Senator Scott Ludlam "Welcoming" Tony Abbott to Western Australia. Obviously we use the term welcoming with tongue firmly in cheek, as it addressed pretty much every problem all your 'lefty' friends have been complaining about on Facebook since Abbott & Co. came into power last year (If you haven't seen it, you definitely should down the bottom). Anyway it inspired us to reach out to the Senator (inbetween him going to Nine Inch Nails/QOTSA CONCERTS), go a little deeper into what he is trying to achieve, and how he's going about getting back into the Senate at the upcoming WA Senate re-election (after last year's was discounted following a recount and a bunch of missing votes). [UPDATE] Before you read below, enjoy this sweet little video of DJ S Ludz on the decks at a recent fundraiser with the legends at Death Disco -

Skrillex Text Message Interview
We've held off on text interviews for a while, but decided Skrillex was a good reason to start them again.. Last week saw the - somewhat surprising - release of Skrillex's debut album, Recess, via a mysterious App/game he put up on his website. Unlocking a new track every 30 minutes, you could stream it via said App until its ACTUAL RELEASE in Australia last Friday - tomorrow in America. What it also meant was we had an opportunity to not only revive a format which we put to bed for a while in the Text Interview, but chat to an old friend who we hadn't seen around this part of the world for a couple of years. What ensued was plenty of bro-ing out, some emoji descriptions, how Recess came to be, Australian producer discussion and some TV show called Heavyweights.
