More Whitesnake More Whitesnake

It’s officially the end of an era: David Coverdale, the longtime singer for the hard rock band Whitesnake, has announced his retirement from touring.

The 74-year-old singer founded Whitesnake in 1978, following a stint as the lead singer of the band Deep Purple from 1973 to 1976. Known for his powerful, blues-tinged voice, Coverdale has been the voice behind numerous hits, including the 1987 tracks Here I Go Again and Is This Love.

In a video posted to social media, Coverdale sipped a glass of wine while informing fans that he’d be retiring.

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, brothers and sisters of the Snake, a special announcement for you,” Coverdale said. “After 15 years plus… the last few years have been very evident to me that it’s time really for me to hang up my rock and roll platform shoes and my skin-tight jeans.”

He continued, “And as you can see, we’ve taken care of the lion’s wig. But it’s time for me to call it a day. I love you dearly. I thank everyone who’s assisted and supported me on this incredible journey. All the musicians, the crew, the fans, the family. It’s amazing.”

He ended the video by sharing a tribute to the Whitesnake track, Fare Thee Well.

The British singer has been performing since 1966, working as a “singing salesman” for local bands such as Vintage 67, The Government, and Fabulosa Brothers, before getting his break with Deep Purple.

Following the band’s disbandment – and his leaving Deep Purple – Coverdale briefly went solo, releasing an album called White Snake in February 1977 before forming the band he’s best known for leading.

A lengthy career has followed, including hiatuses and reformations. Coverdale has also returned to solo music in between periods with Whitesnake, as well as a partnership with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.

In February 2020, Whitesnake performed in Australia for the first time in twelve years, as part of a quick arena tour with German rockers Scorpions. The band’s last concert took place in 2022.
