More Toto More Toto

Pub Choir have shared their most ambitious effort to date: a cover of Toto’s 1982 classic Africa sung by more than 18,000 strangers between 15 cities.

The mega-cover was performed across the duration of Pup Choir’s recent national tour, where they united theatres full of strangers in Adelaide (Tarndanya), Darwin (Garramilla), Melbourne (Naarm), Brisbane (Meanjin), Sydney (Gadigal country), Cairns (Gimuy), Rockhampton (Darumbal country), Townsville (Bindal and Wulgurukaba country), the Gold Coast (Kombumerri country), Ballarat (Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung country), Hobart (nipaluna), Caloundra (Gubbi Gubbi country), Canberra (Ngunnawal country), Wollongong (Dharawal country) and Perth (Boorloo) to sing along with them.

All in all, the effort brought together a total of 18,812 singers, backed by a cumulative 37 musical guests. As the international choir group wrote on Facebook: “How good is it when people work together?!?”

“Such fun! I love being a part of the choir on the night, and I thoroughly enjoy seeing the beautifully crafted video afterwards,” one attendee, Joanne Neill wrote in the comments on the video.

According to their website, Pub Choir is “a euphoric sensation that transforms a crowd of tipsy strangers into a legendary choir” by way of “a show that is equal parts music, comedy, and beer”. Their next Australian show will be at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall on Wednesday September 27 (tickets are, unfortunately, all sold out), with tours in the UK and the US set to follow.
