"Being inside a big metal cage wasn’t safe with the amount of lightning that was happening.”

The inaugural run of WA-based festival Ship-Wrecked was cut short over the weekend due to bad weather that was rendered a safety risk.

Promoters Manic Events Management decided to call the festival on Saturday early after heavy rain turned into a thunderstorm that posed a safety risk to the artists, crew and punters, with managing director Daniel Bruce telling The Music that headline act Thundamentals were also consulted in the decision.

“There was an executive decision made in conjunction with the production crew and also the artists," Bruce said.

“We had to evacuate the patrons for their own safety, because being inside a big metal cage wasn’t safe with the amount of lightning that was happening.

“We approached Thundamentals and asked them what they wanted to do and they notified us that, yes, it was dangerous and that they’d prefer not to go on stage in those conditions.”

The event, featuring Kingswood, Shannon Noll, The Delta Riggs and more, was scheduled to wrap at 9.30pm, and the decision meant headline act Thundamentals were unable to perform and Kingswood’s set was cut short.

While an on-the-ground announcement was made in regards to the Thundamentals cancellation, some ticketholders have lashed out at the festival over there being no formal or wider statement.
