"You could have very happily ended it there, I think a lot of people are happy and I felt happy with the ending."

The critical and commercial success of Foxtel series Upright has led to many calling for a second season and Tim Minchin has revealed ideas have indeed been thrown around.

The success of the 2019-screened Australian production - which follows Laclan "Lucky" Flynn (Minchin) and Meg (Milly Alcock) who "forge the unlikeliest of bonds in their quest to get a precious piano from one side of the country to the other" - saw it also picked up in the US and the UK.

Appearing on a new episode of The Green Room with Neil Griffiths podcast, Minchin discussed a possible second season.

"I'll always tell you what I'm allowed to tell you or what I can tell you and the answer is I can't tell you anything," Minchin told host Neil Griffiths.

"I wasn't sure whether I wanted to do it even if it came up... it really is just a road movie chopped into eight parts and it has a real ending to it. You could have very happily ended it there, I think a lot of people are happy and I felt happy with the ending.

"And then the producer said, 'Just come in and we'll get together with the writers again and let's brainstorm it'. Of course, we came up with this really cool idea... a good set up.

"We're gonna put [Lucky and Meg] back together maybe. They won't get back together straight away.

"That's about it, I can't really tell you anything. Except that I'm excited by it which I am stoked with because I wasn't sure I would be and I certainly wouldn't do it if I wasn't."

Upright is up for a number of AACTA Awards, including Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Performer (for both Minchin and Alcock).

Meanwhile, Minchin's original song from the series, Carry You, has also scored a nomination at next month's Screen Music Awards.
