Underground Playlists: New Music From Emerging Talent Blake Rose, Yen Strange & More

Underground Playlists are back, and the music is better than ever. In fact, we’ve decided to pick out our favourite tracks each week and share them with you, so you can get to know the best of the bunch and keep your finger on the pulse. Here are this week's top picks for our Underground Playlists, brought to you by the legends at Mountain Goat Beer.

Lottie Mcleod (QLD)

Happy Birthday

Brisbane singer/songwriter Lottie Mcleod is the new kid on the block, but her debut single Happy Birthday, will tug at your heartstrings just as well as any heavy hitter in the alternative/indie scene. Slow and rhythmic, the track sails along at the perfect pace for a Sunday afternoon drive with the windows down and the hot summer air flowing in. Mcleod's vocals are smooth like silk and inject a sense of heavy nostalgia into the song. Fans of Pheobe Bridges and the ‘folklore’ Taylor Swift era will quickly become obsessed with this new slow-burn bop.

Yen Strange (NSW)

If Snakes Can Afford Nice Cars I Wanna Be A Snake Too

Sometimes a song grabs you by the hand and takes you on a journey, and that's exactly what, If Snakes Can Afford Nice Cars I Wanna Be A Snake Too does. Blending elements of hyper-pop electronica and hip-hop, Yen Stange has created this clever, addictive and just plain cool track that is currently dominating the underground scene. Unique doesn’t even begin to describe this song, and we honestly can’t stop listening. Lovers of Mallrat and M.I.A will rejoice with glee when they hear If Snakes Can Afford Nice Cars I Wanna Be A Snake Too.

Blake Rose (WA)

Use Me

Perth up-and-comer Blake Rose has been kicking around for a little while and has slowly won over his dedicated fan base one song at a time. His newest hit, Use me, is a left turn away from his usual singer/songwriter ballads and leans more towards an indie bop. Filled with danceable beats and echoing vocals, Rose is really flexing his producer muscles and levelling up to sit amongst the big dogs. If you’re into Clinton Kane, Troye Sivan and The Preatures, this one’s for you.

Sachém, Tom Thum (QLD)

Glitter & Gold

Brisbane boys Sachém and Tom Thum have teamed up and released Glitter & Gold, a funk-driven hip-hop track that dives head first into the political deep end of Hip-Hop. Advocating for First Nation/African American voices within the Australian music scene, Glitter & Gold speaks volumes about the talent and passion that Sachém and Tom Thum both have. Put them both together, and you truly get something exceptional. Fans of Thundamentals and Hilltop Hoods will lap this track up.

Turpentine Babycino (NSW)

Calamity

Newcastle legends Turpentine Babycino has smashed it out of the park with their sophomore single, Calamity, which immediately takes you back to the peak of the 2000s rock. Filled with driving guitars and quick, mosh-worthy beats, Calamity is such a fun and exciting addition to the bands growing catalogue. Lead singer Georgie Winchester is a standout and offers such a perfect blend of gravel and angst in her vocal delivery that truly makes the song. We can’t wait to headbang along to this track in a skeezy dive bar sometime soon. Fans of Tired Lion, Blink182 and Sonic Youth will have fun with this one.
