South African singer-songwriter and second-line star on this year’s Listen Out line-up, Tyla, has pulled out of the nationally travelling hip-hop and EDM festival just two days before the event begins in Melbourne (27 September – public holiday).
The news was posted on the Listen Out Instagram account earlier today (25 September), with the organisers sharing a statement from Tyla’s management, which read:
“It saddens us to let you know that Tyla will no longer be able to perform over the next few weeks, affecting her performances at Listen Out festival.
“Tyla is working hard to connect with as many of her fans globally as possible. These are hard decisions to make, and she really appreciates all the support from her Australian Tygers.”
Tyla was set to make her Australian debut at this year’s Listen Out. In March, the singer cancelled her world tour dates after suffering a back injury, admitting in an interview with People this week that the recovery process has been “frustrating at times”.
Tyla isn’t the only star to have pulled out of this year’s Listen Out festival, with American rapper Flo Milli pulling out of the event last week (19 September).

“Unfortunately Flo Milli has cancelled her Australian tour so she won’t be appearing at Listen Out. We’re working hard to add a new act to the lineup as soon as possible,” organisers wrote on Instagram.
While Tyla’s departure from the bill is even more short notice than that, organisers assure punters in the comment section that they’re “working on” booking a replacement act.
Listen Out promoters said about its return earlier this year, “It’s been a very tough time for the Australian music festival industry, and we are thrilled to be back in 2024, welcoming returning and first-time attendees through the gates.”
The festival begins at Melbourne’s Caribbean Gardens this Friday, then heads to Perth (HBF Arena) on Saturday, and Listen In takes place in Adelaide on Sunday. After a few days off, Listen Out will continue at the Brisbane Showgrounds on Saturday, 5 October, and wrap up at Sydney’s Centennial Park on Sunday, 6 October.
This year’s Listen Out is headlined by 21 Savage and John Summit. Other acts appearing on the bill include Skepta, Sub Focus – Evolve, Lil Tjay, Lithe, Folamour, Miss Kaninna, and more.
