'True Detective' Season Two May Have Its New Lead

21 May 2014 | 2:15 pm | Staff Writer

Reports have emerged the anthology series' second year will be led by Jessica Chastain

With season one of HBO's phenomenal crime drama True Detective- and the lauded turns from its leads, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson - well and truly behind us, it seems the station is not letting the cult smash disappear from the public conscious for too long, with news surfacing today that it has offered the main role for the anthology show's second season to Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica Chastain.

According to The Nerdist, the announcement comes amid a wave of rumours recently that series creator Nic Pizzolatto has been toying with the idea of utilising a female-driven cast for True Detective's second case, presumably in part as a response to charges of sexism that have been levelled at its first season.

The Nerdist's sources claim that although the Interstellar star has been offered the role, she is yet to accept, and Chastain's representatives aren't saying much for the moment, either.

Regardless, Chastain's star has been steadily on the rise since her acclaimed appearance in the Oscar-winning war film, going on to star in the legitimately creepy Mama last year, with performances yet to be seen in the forthcoming Miss Julie, the aforementioned Interstellar (with McConaughey), and action-crime-drama A Most Violent Year - so her acceptance of this role would inarguably do good things for the series and its wider perception/relatability among non-cis-het-white-male audiences.

The news, of course, opens the flood gates for a whole new ream of #truedetectiveseason2 jokes on Twitter, which previously saw suggestions including Breaking Bad's Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, Game Of Thrones' Arya and The Hound, Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt's characters from Seven, and David Letterman and Stephen Colbert. Granted, this doesn't seem as exciting by comparison... but it's probably a better omen for the show moving forward.

In the interim, we'll be seeing Chastain in Interstellar next. If you're not across this epic science fiction romp about wormholes and alternate universes from The Dark Knight Trilogy's Christopher Nolan, we've got you covered below.
