After sharing a shoutout to the Hoodoo Gurus on his cockatoo, Biggy Pop’s Instagram account, Iggy Pop has shown some love for another Australian band.

This time around, it was The Chats. The Godfather of Punk shared his thoughts about the Sunshine Coast “shed rock” band, and revealed that he discovered them thanks to Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme.

Iggy Pop discussed his relationship with The Chats’ music on a recent episode of his BBC 6 radio show, Slow Sunday Confidential, after spinning their track, Bus Money.

“Those were the formidable Chats from Australia,” he began, introducing the band after playing their song.

“That one’s called Bus Money; I’ve played it before. It’s so great, it has a story, and he’s got a big problem because he spent his bus money! How is he going to get home? I’ve been in this position and, you know, he had financial planning issues. This happens.

He continued, “I learned about The Chats from Josh Homme. I was backstage at their gig in Miami after the show, and he said, ‘You gotta look at this guy and listen to these guys!’ And he had a video of The Chats playing their killer number, Smoko.”

Iggy did what he was told and threw on the Smoko music video. Reflecting on what he saw, he added: “It was this big, strapping kid with sun-sensitive skin and red hair. He looked just like the son of Josh! That’s where I heard about them.

“They’ve got all sorts of great songs; I got to play a gig with them once in Melbourne, and they’re something else. They seem to be in London a lot lately, so you’re better off having them.”

The Chats have shared the stage with the likes of Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters, and Queens Of The Stone Age, and in April 2026, they’ll return to California and represent Australia at Coachella.
