The Chats Super Fan Named 'Hard Quiz' Champion

Sunshine Coast punk rockers The Chats were a super fan named Ella’s category of choice on this week’s episode of Hard Quiz, and she’s even gotten a shoutout from the band.
If you’re unfamiliar with the series, Hard Quiz is an Australian comedy quiz show that airs on the ABC. A spin-off of host Tom Gleeson’s Hard Chat segment on the satirical news program, The Weekly with Charlie Pickering, the episodes find Gleeson poking fun at the contestants or their subject of expertise, with contestants mocking him right back.
This week, The Chats’ biggest fan, Ella, won against experts in topics such as Peter Sellers, beer, and the Great Fire of London, taking home the Hard Quiz Big Brass Mug.
Responding to ABC iView’s post about Ella’s appearance on Hard Quiz, where she correctly answered the question about the inspiration behind The Chats’ kind of music (“shed rock”), the band commented that they hoped she’d win the episode.
Following her win, the band shared photos of Ella on Hard Quiz on Instagram and captioned the post, “Congratulations to tonight’s ABC Hard Quiz champion Ella, who somehow knows more about the Chats than we do!”
After Ella expressed excitement about her win in the comments, The Chats offered her “beers on us next time on the Goldy.”

The Chats have two albums under their belts, including 2022’s GET F*CKED, which landed at #2 on the ARIA Albums Chart, #3 on the UK Independent Albums Chart, and charted in Germany and Scotland. At the 2022 ARIA Awards, the album won the Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album award.
Along with the release of GET F*CKED, The Chats broke the mailing service Mailchimp and continue to make waves at home and abroad. They’ve shared the stage with the likes of Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters, and Queens Of The Stone Age, and in April 2026, they’ll return to California and represent Australia at Coachella.
