As you've seen with our various Writers Poll results this week, we've got opinions. And where better to express those opinions than in reviews?
You were particularly interested in our festival reviews, while you were also eager to find out what Big Day Out headliners Pearl Jam were sounding like on their new album. Here's the most read reviews of 2013.
LIVE REVIEWS
1. Soundwave – Sydney Olympic Park
One wonders given the enormous scope of this year's event how Soundwave 2014 can possibly top it, but they will no doubt give it a fair crack.
2. Groovin The Moo – Maitland Showground
You'd be hard-pressed to find a more laidback and fun atmosphere as the one created by this festival gem.
3. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Sydney Opera House
You like the idea of Cave's melodrama backed by a 20-piece string section and that children's choir, but somehow it doesn't quite connect.
4. ARIA WEEK: EMI Party With Alison Wonderland – The Standard
So began a short trip down the rabbit hole with a taste of five songs that revealed her abilities stretch way beyond mixing other people's music.
5. Bruce Springsteen – Brisbane Entertainment Centre
Even with the lingering uncertainty about how long it might take him to return to this realm, it's just so reassuring knowing that The Boss is out there both entertaining and looking out for us – tonight proves once more that he's truly one of a kind.
ALBUM REVIEWS
1. Pearl Jam – Lightning Bolt
While their albums are starting to look formulaic, the band manages to find new ways to impress and inspire. True to their nature, Pearl Jam just aren't slowing down.
2. Boy & Bear – Harlequin Dream
Harlequin Dream perfectly combines the jaunty swagger of neo-folk with real emotion and a touch of bitter sweetness for an album of real substance.
3. Horrorshow – King Amongst Many
Horrorshow's sound is more consistent than most. That means highlights here will come down to personal taste.
4. Northlane – Singularity
An early candidate for album of the year: Parkway Drive – you've got company.
5. The Cat Empire – Steal The Light
Now independent musos rather than major label darlings, they're exploring a sound that's less pop than their past projects and, arguably, a bit more interesting.
