Fans of The Brave can rejoice - the Brisbane-based metal band have returned from hiatus, dropping their first track since 2019, Breaking Out, today (November 21).
The dark sci-fi inspired anthem is full of raw, impassioned vocals, creating a visceral landscape of tension and release. According to lead singer Nate Toussaint, the track was written from a place of anger and exasperation with the repetition of life.
“There were a few things happening in my life that were causing me this overwhelming feeling of frustration at the time that Breaking Out was being written. As the song started getting fleshed out, I wanted to ensure that feeling was conveyed lyrically.
“I knew I wanted the song to be quite repetitive, first to get stuck in people's heads, but also because for me at the time, it was that constant repetition, that Groundhog Day feeling that was wearing me down and burning me out. We've all been there and had those days where you just want to say, ‘Fuck it, I'm out of here! I'm getting off this mouse wheel that is just going round and round, is doing nothing to get me any further and is just slowly wearing me down...I'm breaking out of here,’” Toussaint said in a press release.
Coinciding with the track’s release, The Brave have dropped the accompanying music video - inspired by the Alien franchise. Filmed and directed by Ten Of Swords Media's Colin Jeffs, the video depicts the band awakening from hypersleep in a sterile, enigmatic escape-room setting. With doctors, breathing tubes, and computers aplenty, the clip draws from the eerie, atmospheric visuals of 80s/90s sci-fi films. You can find Breaking Out’s music video below.
To celebrate their return from hiatus, The Brave are performing live for the first time in over four years - supporting In Hearts Wake on their upcoming tour, alongside Ocean Sleeper and Inertia.
