A public survey on the Perth live music scene has revealed punters believe the most integral elements for revitalising the sector are the protection of existing venues and legislative change.
The Live Music Survey was run by Perth Venue Action over two months from April, collecting 609 responses from a varied demographic, mainly consisted of regular gig goers, and of those, 90% said protecting venues was “most important”.
The survey also encompassed live music promotion and audience development, both of which were ranked highly, with over 60% of those asked saying both were also important.
Perth Venue Action was established at the start of this year, following the closure of long-running venues The Bakery, Ya Ya’s, The Beat, Kulcha, and more over the past two years.
Its members consist of key members of the WA music scenes, including Jason Cleary (RTRFM), Dave Cutbush (Life Is Noise), Andrew Ryan (Cool Perth Nights) and more, with an aim to revive the Perth music scene and increase demand for live venues.

While Velvet Lounge is currently at risk of shutting its door to live music following noise complaints, Perth has welcomed new live music venues Jack Rabbit Slim’s and The Boston in the past couple of months.
You can support the Perth music scene by heading to the RTRFM Radiothon next weekend, and keeping an eye on the Perth Venue Action website for future meetings and surveys.
