Gold Coast-based pop-rock duo Super Massive have offered an update to their fans after six months of near-radio silence on social media.
In the post, singer Malina Hamilton-Smith revealed that, after an exciting end to 2024, in which the duo celebrated the release of their new single, Caught In A Web, she was unfortunately dealt a series of tough, personal blows.
In January, Hamilton-Smith’s father sadly passed away, but before she could even mourn her father, she became “quick sick.”
Hamilton-Smith wrote, “I got cellulitis from mozzie bites that developed into an abscess in my neck, and I ended up in hospital for 5 days on IV antibiotics and having a million tests, scans and biopsies. We had to postpone a celebration of life for Dad and do a private funeral.”
Worse still, on the afternoon of her father’s funeral, Hamilton-Smith was diagnosed with cancer. A small tumour in her mouth – her left tonsil, to be precise – was found.
However shocking the diagnosis was, the cancer was found at stage one and is “highly treatable.” Hamilton-Smith has been undergoing chemo-radiation therapy over the last four months, and it’s been successful thus far. She’s currently in the “healing and recuperation stage.”

She continued, “The people closest to us who are aware have been incredibly supportive and helpful and continually sending lots of love and positive vibes, which has meant a great deal. Thank you all.
“It’s really unfortunate the year took a turn in this direction, as we had plans to complete vocal recordings for a mini-album, make a videoclip for Caught In A Web, and tour!!
“I'd like to get back onto some musical pursuits, but I've got some healing, rehab and recuperation to do first.”
Since her diagnosis and treatment, Hamilton-Smith has been unable to sing and dance. However, that’s led to her re-embracing playing the guitar and bass, which she “hadn’t done in ages.”
“It has been really nice to just sit and relax and noodle on them. Therapeutic!”
Hamilton-Smith has also shared a blog post in which she delved into more details about her recent experiences. You can read that here.
The Music wishes Hamilton-Smith a speedy and smooth recovery. To further support Super Massive during this time, you can listen to and purchase their music on Bandcamp.
