Viral footage of Garbage singer Shirley Manson sharing a plea to the music industry continues to make the rounds ahead of the band’s return to Australia.

Earlier this month, Manson continued her nightly ritual of discussing the challenges of the music industry, which culminated in the band’s “last headline tour of North America.” During her speech to fans at the Mission Ballroom in Denver, she urged them—and the wider industry—to support the weirdos making music or receive “fucking white bread.”

“We have announced that this is our last headline tour of North America. By that, we mean it has become entirely unsustainable for a band like us to come and tour anywhere except the coasts,” she admitted.

“And it’s upsetting, but we’ve had a glorious 30-year career, and we really have no complaints, but I bring this up every night, because I think it’s imperative that we all start to understand what exactly is going on in the music industry.”

She then discussed the wealth disparity between the world’s biggest stars and “working musicians.” Adding that the reality is “difficult to get your head around,” Manson explained that the problem with most of the music industry is that a majority of people making music are working musicians, not big pop stars.

But Manson assured fans that she wasn’t throwing a “pity party.”

“This is an alarm call for all the young generations of musicians who are in our wake and who we feel duty-bound to speak up for, because nobody is speaking up for them,” she said.

Manson also discussed the lack of an effective union for artists, Spotify, record labels, and merchandise companies all taking home cuts of an artist’s work. Towards the end of her speech, she encouraged fans to continue supporting live music and buy physical items when they can.

She concluded, “So, I bring this up tonight, because you are the ones who will lose out on generations of esoteric, risk-taking, creative, adventurous, weirdos, rebels, agitators, provocateurs. You’re gonna get fucking white bread. That’s it.

“Thank you so much for coming out tonight, for supporting us for 30 years. Our love is strong for you. Keep supporting live music when you can, buy vinyl when you can. We love you so much, Denver. You have been so good to us. We do hope we see you again. We can’t guarantee it. In the meantime, have an incredible life. Live long. Live hard. Be safe and be kind. We love you.”

Garbage will return to Australia this December, performing at this year’s Good Things Festival and playing sideshows in Auckland, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Sydney. The Palais Theatre and Sydney Opera House Concert House shows have already sold out.
