Armed with an array of instruments, the journey to country artist Shane Nicholson's brand new album Living In Colour - which officially dropped today - is a balanced testament to life's highs and lows, and struggling to make sense of the times we're all living in.
Written and recorded in a studio on NSW's Central Coast, Living In Colour swiftly became a solo affair, largely due to the ongoing COVID restrictions while Nicholson also balanced producing several other artist's projects and his eventful personal life in the lead-up.
“That’s exactly me to a T. I guess in some ways that’s good: I have more positive days than I used to, and that probably spills over into songs now and then,” Nicholson said the journey to Living In Colour.
“It’s been a pretty sad couple of years to be frank, losing one of my best mates to suicide, grandparents, my partner lost her dad, my manager lost his brother, a few close industry friends.
"And then in the first COVID lockdown there was this crazy spate of musician suicides in Australia, people that we’d all known.”

Embracing the unexpected opportunities presented by lockdown life while also providing a conduit for the stresses and anxieties that went along with it, Living In Colour is a heartfelt outing for Nicholson who now sits just shy of 25 years since he first burst onto the Aussie scene in the late '90s.
“I just found it fun to be doing it myself. It was sort of a return to the old days, my teenage years, when I had my first Pro Tools set up on old computer and I was making demos and putting songs together, learning about the mechanics of production in a bedroom in Brisbane in my parents’ house,” Nicholson said of the recording process for Living In Colour.
“I haven’t really done that since then, being able to sit there by myself and pick up instrument after instrument. It was mostly me and a bottle of whiskey into the night, that was it.”
While Nicholson's Living In Colour album tour dates have been pushed back to accommodate for the ongoing COVID outbreaks around the country, fans certainly don't have to miss out on catching the brand new album live in action the same day it's released - you can catch the man himself tonight, performing songs from the new album on Facebook Live from 7pm AEST.
