A genre-bending, family-friendly event with an important cause is taking place in Melbourne/Naarm today.

Sovereign Day Out is taking place at Camp Sovereignty – located at King’s Domain, near the Shrine of Remembrance, which is a short walk from Flinders Street Station – from 12 pm until late, featuring live music, speakers, stalls, dance, and food.

The event has been organised quickly in response to far-right demonstrators attacking First Nations people at Camp Sovereignty last Sunday (31 August), following the “March for Australia” anti-immigration rallies.

Neo-Nazi leader Thomas Sewell has since been denied bail over charges linked to the attack, including “violent disorder, affray, assault, discharging a missile and other offences,” ABC reports.

Sovereign Day Out is a free, family-friendly event, with no alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs allowed. Performers taking to the stage today include The Terrys, Miss Kaninna, Becca Hatch, Kee’ahn, Birdz, Mo’Ju, Kian, Dallas Woods, and many more. The day will be hosted by talented MCs Shiralee Hood, Hau Latukefu, and Sosefina Fuamoli.

While it’s a free event, donations are welcome for those who want to support Camp Sovereignty. Bank account details to support the protest movement can be found in the comments section of posts about the event.

“An Attack Against One Of Us Is An Attack On Us All. So We Come Together,” Miss Kaninna shared on her Instagram account when sharing the poster for Sovereign Day Out earlier this week.

She added, “Always was always will be Aboriginal Land.”

On Friday (5 September), the Sovereign Day Out team shared the set times and map for today’s event. You can see those details below.

Event organisers also reminded punters that Camp Sovereignty is a sacred site, so it’s essential that everyone honours and protects the space by leaving it as they found it.

As part of the event’s community guidelines, organisers added: “With a large number of acts and community members joining us, we ask everyone to work together to create a safe and welcoming environment.

“Disrespectful, racist, or anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. Please treat each other with care and respect so we can make Sovereign Day Out a truly special day for all.”
