It Looks Like We Won't Be Getting Eurovision Asia After All...

SBS has confirmed the news.

SBS has confirmed that Eurovision Asia plans will not be going ahead.

As broken by TV Tonight, the broadcaster has shared that they will not be proceeding with plans for an Asia-Pacific competition.

"I think it’s fair to say we’ve rescinded our rights," SBS commissioning editor and Australian head of delegation, Josh Martin told the publication.

"We spent a number of years trying to figure out how to do it and then the global pandemic came along."

Plans for the competition, which was due to be held in Australia with 20 countries competing, where originally announced back in March 2016 with Blink TV (who produced SBS's Eurovision broadcasts since 2009) saying that they expected the show to draw in an audience of 200 million each year.

It was speculated the same year that show would be likely to launch in 2018.

"I think (this year’s Eurovision) renews our confidence in the idea that this is a big brand… what I can say is that we’re absolutely working on plans to get this happening next year," SBS chief content officer Helen Kellie said at the time.

While Eurovision Asia won't be going ahead at this stage, it has been confirmed that EBU - Eurovision's broadcasters - will go ahead with an American Song Contest in 2022 which will be hosted by NBC.

This year's Eurovision Song Contest certainly did not disappoint. Check out all the highlights here.
