It’s a sure sign that warmer weather is on the way when RTRFM’s Courtyard Club returns to Perth/Boorloo’s CBD.
Nestled in Northbridge in the State Theatre’s courtyard, the free eight-week series will feature a rotating selection of local bands and DJs every Friday night from 1 November (this Friday!).
This year Courtyard Club’s host, community radio station RTRFM, has teamed up with the WA Arts and Culture Trust to celebrate the beloved event’s tenth year.
RTRFM’s Events and Operations Manager, Chris Wheeldon, says it has been great to “see the event become one of those things folks put in their diary as soon as summer hits.”
“It is very much a sign that the end of the year is getting close and the sun is out, Christmas is soon and local music is at the forefront of it.”
“Good wholesome local music” is Courtyard Club’s bread and butter, but live broadcasts of the station’s Drivetime show with host Vishnu will also feature. 2024 also marks 40 years of RTRFM’s Woodstock Rock, and this milestone will be recognised on the 29 November evening with a mix of important tunes from the 1960s and 1970s.

You will also be able to catch sets from artists such as Drea, Good News Now We Can Eat All the Vampires, Abbe May, Joan & The Giants, Ricky Neil Jnr, and Soukouss Internationale.
Curating free community music events like this is “pretty important” Wheeldon says.
“Unfortunately at the moment people are reluctant to spend much money on local, original bands. So to have the support of the Arts and Culture Trust and the State Theatre Centre to showcase some local bands in a free setting right in the middle of Northbridge is pretty important and a great opportunity.”
“You always hope that if people see a local band for free they will pay for them next time and allow a band to build their audience.”
This Friday’s opening night will see the station team up with the Perth International Jazz Festival, with sets from Bad Neighbour, WAAPA Jazz Collective, and DJ Tash Thomas.
The perfect way to kick start your weekends this summer - and did we mention it’s free?!
