The 70-year-old artist is bigger than ever in 2012.
Detroit singer-songwriter Rodriguez is making his way back to Australia for the third time this decade early next year, but this time there is more hype than ever on the 70-year-old performer.
The story of his career is legendary, he released two incredible albums in 1970 and 1971, they did not sell very well at all and he faded away into obscurity. Somehow his music found its way to South Africa and connected moreso than any other contemporary artist had done and he became a bona-fide superstar, except no one knew who he was.
Rumours of his death were prevalent, but he was evetually found in the late-1990s, living in a less than modest Detroit home, working as a labourer full-time. The story was so fascinating that first-time director Malik Bendjelloul decided it needed to be told on film and Searching For Sugar Man was born. The film was a hit at Sundance and in cinemas around the world and has been awarded a whole raft of awards and honours this year. Now, surprisingly, and deservedly, Rodriguez is finally popular in his home country.
Australian audiences have always loved him and his return has seen audiences go wild over tickets, selling out each of the four shows that had been announced, prompting promoters to add three more onto the tour.
