"I come to this project with a genuine love of his work."

A Melbourne musician has commenced pre-production on a documentary based on '90s Sydney band, Glide.

Ben deHoedt announced the project, Tangled (working title), earlier this year which will be "shaped by the stories, insights and perspectives".

Formed in 1991 and fronted by William Arthur, Glide released their debut album Open Up & Croon in 1995 and went on to tour with the likes of Blur and Lush.

Glide released their second LP Disappear Here in 1996 before Arthur passed away in 1999. In 2000, the indie-rock outfit released their third and final album, Last.

Speaking with The Music, deHoedt said he was in the depths of researching, maintaining regular contact with ex-band members and family while digitising visual archives and more.

“As for what inspired this thing, I was looking for something relatively doable which would not require jumping through too many major label hassles and mega egos to get going,” deHoedt said.

"I grew up with Glide and those songs influenced my own writing and performing at the time, and sure enough, nobody has documented their journey.

“I found that William's songs still stand up - and a lot of layers to his writing became evident as I revisited the back catalogue. So I come to this project with a genuine love of his work.

“There's also an opportunity here to explore the Aussie music scene of the ‘90s through the experiences of the band and a few reasonably well-known artists from that time who share a connection with Glide.”

While pre-production is well underway, deHoedt doesn’t expect a finished edit for at least another 18 months.
