"We believe that by making this service available there's potential to save lives."

Following the huge success of its debut run last year, it has been confirmed that a pill testing trial will again go ahead at the Groovin The Moo festival in Canberra this April.

As ABC reports, the ACT government has approved the trial at the Exhibition Park, while state and territory health ministers from around the country are being invited to attend to witness the process.

"We are keen for this approach to continue on the basis of the success of the first trial and the failure of policy over many decades now to address harm minimisation adequately," ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said.

"We believe that by making this service available there's potential to save lives.

"In light of the experience in other jurisdictions over the summer with some quite-serious medical issues arising, there will be some additional harm minimisation measures put in place."

It comes after the death of five people from suspected drug overdoses in as many months, while the NSW state government is being slammed for its new festival policy, which has resulted in over 100,000 signatures on a petition pushing against the policy and a rally to go ahead in Sydney this Thursday.

Last month, Ted Noffs Foundation (who were instrumental in the first-ever pill testing trial at Groovin The Moo last year) and its Campaigns & Policy Coordinator, Shelley Smith, gave The Music an exclusive breakdown on how pill testing works and why it is works.
