Band of the moment Mumford & Sons have admitted their surprise at their widespread fan base despite their 'old school' approach and can recall when they all of a sudden became "trendy".

In an interview in this week's The Drum Media, multi-instrumentalist Ted Dwane said the band's heavy focus on touring had sometimes made them question the path they were taking.

“We've battled with the idea of being a prolific band and releasing a lot of records, and also our love for the road, but the two don't really go hand in hand,” he said.

It seems the road has paid off for the English boys though, who have become the face of 21st century folk since their debut Sigh No More in 2009.

“We're endlessly surprised,” admitted Dwane of their spread of fans.

“We get absolutely everyone and it's such a great thing. I remember when we were first setting out in London and we were a bit trendy and you'd get all the kids in their crazy uniforms, and that was really exciting, I thought, 'Fuckin' hell, here we go!' But that's very fickle isn't it? That's a moment – but there's nothing more real than two or three generations of family coming together to a gig – that's the dream.”
