The Go-Betweens are responsible for some of the most beloved songs in Australian music history. Streets Of Your Town? Love Goes On? Was There Anything I Could Do? All are undeniable classics, and all are on the same album.

Next month, a group of the album’s original recording artists – Lindy Morrison, Amanda Brown and John Willsteed – will team up with an all-star roster of musicians and singer-songwriters to celebrate their famous sixth album, 16 Lovers Lane, for a one-night-only performance in the band’s home of Brisbane.

Set to take over the Concert Hall at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) on Friday, 26 September, fans will be able to re-live one of Australia’s most-loved albums alongside musicians Dan Kelly, Danny Widdicombe, and Luke Daniel Peacock.

They’ll be joined by Meg Washington, The GratesPatience Hodgson, Seja Vogel, Regurgitator’s Ben Ely, Jem Cassar‑Daley, Custard’s David McCormack, The ChatsEamon Sandwith, and Darren Hanlon.

Tickets to the one-night-only event are now available – you can find them on the QPAC website.

Released in 1988, 16 Lovers Lane marked The Go-Betweens’ final album featuring the original iteration of the band. After breaking up in 1989, no more music was released until Grant McLennan and Robert Forster reformed the band with a completely different line-up in 2000.

In terms of critical acclaim, 16 Lovers Lane was hugely successful. It received positive reviews from the likes of The Village Voice, Uncut, Mojo, and Q Magazines. The album’s longstanding impact, however, can’t be understated.

In 2010, 16 Lovers Lane landed at #12 in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums, with the authors describing the album as “the band’s high-water mark” and commenting that the songs themselves were “their most direct, accessible and heartfelt ever.”

16 Lovers Lane was also included in the book, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and in 2021, Rolling Stone Australia listed it as #15 on their 200 Greatest Australian Albums of All Time countdown. Want to re-listen to the album ahead of the show? Check it out below.
