'Letters To Morrissey' Is Bringing Courtesy Back

4 July 2014 | 3:44 pm | Staff Writer

...which is kind of ironic, given Morrissey's general lack thereof

More Morrissey More Morrissey

Rather than bother himself with the inconvenience of touring, morose British songsmith Morrissey is cheering himself up in the lead-up to the imminent release of newest LP World Peace Is None Of Your Business by getting his fans to write in to tell him how much they love him.

Since going up online yesterday, the Letters To Morrissey Tumblr - which states its raison d'etre simpy enough: "Dear Morrissey fans, we were inspired by your letters to create this site. Feel free to share your thoughts with Morrissey" - has had more than 100 submissions from around the globe.

Although the grand majority of fans come from English-speaking backgrounds, there are several (apparently) heartfelt missives from Morrissey fans in locales outside the Western world as well.

The letters range from short and sweet - "Dear Morrissey, Come back and play the UK we miss you. Thank you for all the wonderful music you have given us. Take care.x" - to full-length essays detailing the first time the author heard a Morrissey song and in-depth analyses of the times his music helped them personally.

If he wasn't such a massive prat most of the time, it'd be enough to induce tears less than ten letters in. But, as it stands, it's an incredibly honest and beautiful and human and genuine expression of gratitude for an entertainer that has evidently had a profound effect on a great number of his fans' lives.

Some choice selections of sweetness:

"I'm very happy to have this way to say this, and I really hope it gets to you. You deserve to know how much I love I have for your music and how much support I feel from it." - euvoudeixaronomeimergir

"I love you. I saw you, second row, in San Diego, California in 2012. It was your Birthday show. I brought you a painting that I made but was not able to give it you and I asked a man at the venue to take it in hope that you'd receive it. I hope that you did." - Dan

"I first picked up a Smiths album at the age of 12. The first of my friends to hear of you and your touching lyrics. I was growing up in a home that was abusive and I was constantly tormented by an angry and cruel mother. I lost myself in books and music , your music specifically . This is one of my greatest wishes , to thank you . Had I not found you , i have no idea how I would have survived . Thank you thank you thank you." - Anonymous

"When nobody else will listen to me, when nobody else cares, and when nobody else understands, I know that you will be there. I know I can turn to your music, and I know that for that time nothing else matters to me." - Jacob-Lee Hart

It's really pretty moving stuff, and remarkable the variety of manners in which people first came across Morrissey's music and their motivations for making contact. Have a look-see at the rest of the spread at Letters To Morrissey.

If you've warmed up to him again, have a listen to the title track from his forthcoming LP, out on July 15.
